About Us

At Feature Piece Fabrication, based in Nelson/Tasman, we specialise in creating unique steelwork that is as creative as it is functional. From one-off sculptures to customised residential and commercial pieces, we bring together precision, design, and imagination. Working with stainless steel, aluminium, copper, mild steel, and corten, we craft feature pieces that enhance spaces, tell stories, and stand the test of time.

Tom & Larold

Our Story

Tom Ellison started Feature Piece Fabrication because he saw a niche in the industry that fits his desire to spend his time making work that is both meaningful and unique. With more than 25 years in the fabrication industry and a Bachelor of Visual Arts, Tom combines technical skill with creative vision.

Originally from Dunedin, Tom has worked across a wide range of fabrication projects, but always felt most at home when working on pieces that are distinctive, personal, and crafted with care. His approach is rooted in the belief that fabrication can be more than practical — it can also be an art form.

With influences ranging from Salvador Dalí (mirrored in his unmistakable moustache) to contemporary architecture, Tom approaches each commission with precision and imagination. Outside of the workshop, life revolves around his wife Emma, their son Wallace, and Larold, the French bulldog who rarely leaves his side. A recent side project includes the restoration of a 1962 EJ Holden.

Feature Piece Fabrication is a small business with a big vision: to make fabrication personal, creative, and enduring for every client — whether residential, commercial, cultural, or corporate.
